This line jumped out: "I appreciate the offer," he said. "But this is my burden to bear."
And that's it. It's always been Wilson's burden, since he was a little kid and learned early on that he couldn't depend on anyone except himself. I really did get the feeling in this that he was closer to a breakdown than he thought, especially here: Instead he just stood there, shaking, because there was nowhere he could go.
The terror of the sleeping pills, with both his mother and himself, is wrenching -- the echoes from that incident still reverberating down the years.
