I can't believe I didn't comment on this! I was certain I did. My apologies for such a late reply. I was thinking about this story today and just swung by for a re-read. Incredible work, Mer. Just as wonderful as I had remembered it. Wilson's loyalty and self-sacrifice are displayed so beautifully here, and I adore this part:

Sometimes the weight of being Wilson's friend was almost too much to bear. It was impossible to live up to that kind of loyalty, so most of the time House didn't even try.

I loved watching House struggle to understand and deal with the sheer magnitude of Wilson's willingness to do anything to protect him.

House didn't know whether that should reassure or terrify him.

Perfect. Just perfect.

The structure of this collection of stories is fantastic as well, with the four elements and the short phrases. (Do those phrases come from anything in particular? I didn't turn up anything with Google.) Wonderful idea for a House-Wilson study, and such a touching result.

Thanks so much for sharing this. This is definitely one of my favorites of yours.
