Thanks! I have been to the Pali - and was a dorky tourist pretending to get blown over - but I can't claim very much creativity or originality in the idea.
I actually lifted most of the action from a story I'd written and abandoned for another fandom. I'd been thinking that falling was the best fit for air, and then I remembered a story Joseph Campbell told in The Power of Myth about a policeman in Hawaii who grabbed a young man just as he was about to jump off the Pali, and would have been pulled over if his partner hadn't grabbed both of them. It was in reference to the idea an individual sacrificing onself for another against all laws of self-preservation, and since that was the theme I was playing with, it seemed the perfect scenario for air.
